PETS Travel Scheme

The start of the PETS means many pets entering the UK from the EU will be able to bypass quarantine, if they meet the scheme rules.

A key aspect is that the pet must have a microchip implanted and DEFRA specifically recommend an ISO standard microchip.

In addition, every pet must be properly vaccinated and blood tests done to prove freedom from rabies.

Travelling pets will be checked for an appropriate microchip at the point of entry into the UK. Customs officers are equipped with readers meeting the ISO standards. Owners of pets with non-ISO microchips will, at best, have to buy their own reader and their pets may be required to undergo the usual quarantine period.
